June: A Different Kind Of Summer Begins

The summer season officially starts in May, on Memorial Day but summer really kicks in when schools let out and when consistently warm weather starts. June, 2013 had the familiar – like summer hoops and Rockaway Beach Volleyball and the return of the Irish Festival. And it had the different – such as new flood maps. A lot of Rockaway neighborhoods were newly mapped into “A Zones” which meant homeowners would soon face staggering insurance bills. The popular PS1 VW Dome that held meetings, concerts, lectures, and movies ended its run at Beach 94th Street. Mayor Bloomberg released the SIRR report, a 438 page overview of what Sandy did and how the City should prepare for future storms. With the boardwalk gone, jersey barriers were put up on Shore Front Parkway for a makeshift bike and pedestrian path. Because of erosion, a lot of beaches were closed. No boardwalk, closed beaches. It was different.
