March: Rockaway Strong

There was little doubt the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade would take place even in the early days after Sandy. The parade not only launched but attracted huge crowds sending the message that the people here were: Rockaway Strong. Mayor Bloomberg, in his last march as mayor, got roundly booed by many along the route. For the first time in its 120 year history, The Wave ran its editorial on the front page. With the headline “Read This!” The Wave drew attention to the issue of potentially crippling flood insurance premiums. The Wave was the first media outlet to highlight the implications of the Biggert-Waters Act. The City, Senator Schumer and Congressman Meeks took notice – especially after so many locals called and emailed their offices. Although progress was evident, many homes remained vacant; many stores are struggling to reopen. Rapid Repairs announced that the outfit helped repair 20,000 homes.
