'Zack and Miri' - Love Among the Stupids
By Robert Snyder

Hollywood has arrived at a way for lunkheads to save the economy: Make low-budget pornography movies.

That's the premise behind "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," the latest in a series of actor Seth Rogen slacker comedies. Geared to the apparently limitless arrested-development-male market, "Zack and Miri" features gross-out humor at its finest, until the plot turns sappy in the third act. Some will appreciate the love-amongst-the-porn angle as a relief from the crudity. However, the dopier element of filmmaker Kevin ("Clerks") Smith's audience may see sweetness as a cop-out.

The plot concerns a platonic-friends-since first-grade couple, Zack (Rogen) and Miri Linky (Elizabeth Banks), who share a rundown apartment in an arctic Pittsburgh, while trying to eke out a living at a local java joint. Up to their eyeballs in debt, they discover that a surreptitiously taken camera-phone shot of Miri's behind in granny underpants is a sensation on YouTube. That revelation and an encounter with a lucrative gay porno star (Justin Long) at their 10th high school reunion gives them the idea to make money by making porn.

Many comic complications occur along the way to sex cinema success, but the real rub is that when Zack and Miri do the "dirty thing," they realize they are deeply in love. This goes against the grain of grungy blue movies and, possibly, even stupid gross-out ones.

For fans of Seth Rogen and Kevin Smith, "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" may not be your cup of slime, unless you can stomach a little romance amongst the manure.
