Friends, colleagues, family, community members, elected representatives and other dignitaries packed the historic Oak Ridge building on Thursday, Jan. 8 to celebrate NYC Parks Rockaway Supervisor Jill Weber.

Weber, who served as supervisor for Rockaway and Broad Channel for eight years, was retiring after a 34 year career with Parks.

The festive event featured many tributes to Weber, as well as music, food, good humor and even dancing.

Queens Parks Commissioner and longtime colleague Dorothy Lewandoski spoke and led the more formal portion of the event. Among those who spoke were Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchel Silver, State Senator Joe Addabbo, City Councilmembers Eric Ulrich and Donovan Richards, Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder, Queens County Clerk and former Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, and colleagues who worked with Weber on many successful programs. NYC Parks and Recreation First Deputy Commissioner Liam Kavanagh was also in attendance.

Borough President Katz issued a proclamation declaring January as “Jill Weber Day” in Queens.

Many plaques, awards and other personalized mementos were presented to Weber, who enjoyed the festive and high spirited event with her family.

Weber started her career with NYC Parks in 1980. She has now been appointed to the position of Commissioner of Parks and Recreation for North Hempstead.

As one speaker said, “There are few things you could say everyone in Rockaway agrees on.

“But one thing everyone, everyone, agrees on is Jill Weber, and the good she has done for this community.”
