The season officially ended for the eight teams that made up the 2015 T & W Far Rockaway Stop The Violence Women’s Softball League as awards were handed out at a ceremony at O’Donohue Park on Aug. 16.

In addition to recognition given to the winners — The Hit Squad — and the runners up — The Diamonds — all players and coaches were given awards for their hard work. Quita Green was named the league’s MVP.

The President of Rockaway’s NAACP, Elaine Short, was also there to present special awards to some of those who made the Women’s Stop the Violence league possible through their “dedication and commitment.”

Michael Walker and James Jenkins shared the Matt West Humanitarian Award. The Man of the Year was Thomas Martin and the Woman of the Year was Odalys Figueroa.

Figueroa is the mother of Jacob Figueroa, 12, in whose honor The Hit Squad took up the name Team Jacob. The boy was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer in July of 2014. Jacob has undergone chemo, radiation and several surgeries.
