Weekend Celebration of Land and Water

By Judah Asimov, Outreach Coordinator, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance

On Saturday, April 22, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) is hosting two great events to celebrate Rockaway’s unique waterfront and natural environment. Both events will begin at the Rockaway Institute for a Sustainable Environment (RISE), located at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd. Starting at 11:00 a.m., RWA will be holding a planting to help create a natural protective buffer to shield the Rockaways from future storms and flooding. The focus is on planting beach plum (Prunus maritima), a species of salt tolerant plum, which is native to the sand dunes of the East Coast. The beach plum produces a small, edible, and tart fruit that RWA hopes to make into jam next year.

The dune planting is also a perfect event for students in need of community service hours. Interested students should bring their community service forms. RWA would like to thank Patagonia and Global Brands Group for sponsoring this event.

At 2:00 p.m., join Heather Kramer and RWA for a foraging tour of the Rockaways. Those who join this tour will learn to enjoy edible plants and reaffirm their commitment to preserving and rebuilding our ecological riches. Advanced registration at rwalliance.org is suggested, as space is limited.
