Join the Black Surfing Association for their second annual beach clean-up at Saturday, May 20. The clean-up will begin at 8 a.m. at Beach 60th Street and will be followed by a brunch at Cuisine by Claudette, 143 Beach 116th St.

The State University of New York at Potsdam will recognize more than 1,000 candidates for graduation during the College’s 2017 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 20, including Alaina Dochylo of Rockaway Park, who is set to graduate cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Studies and English & Creative Writing, Felicia Thompson of Arverne who is set to graduate magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Frederick Wilmot of Far Rockaway, who is set to graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice Studies.The Wave congratulates them and their families.

Parking restrictions on the west end began on May 15, so remember to keep your car off the street.

The Rockaway Civic Association will be hosting a beach clean-up on May 20 as well, event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. It will be focusing on the beaches from Beach 98th Street to Beach 129th Street.The event qualifies for community service hours. Register at RockawayCivic.com.

According to qns.com, television host, author and chef Anthony Bourdain recently stopped in Rockaway during a trip through Queens. Find out where he dined in his latest episode of “Parts Unknown,” set to air on May 21 at 9 p.m. on CNN. Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica, Inc. (NHSJ), a not-for-profit housing counseling agency is hosting a free workshop for residents who were affected by Hurricane Sandy on May 31 at Queens Library’s Swing Space, 1003 Beach 20th St., in Far Rockaway from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Workshop participants will learn about resources that can help them with their recovery plans and to address unmet needs. Residents will receive information about programs that provide affordable home repair loans and grants, foreclosure prevention services, financial counselling and relocation assistance.

On Saturday, May 20, the members of Msgr.William F. Burke Rockaway Council # 2672, Knights of Columbus will rededicate the Monument to the Unborn.The monument was originally installed in February 1996 and was stolen from the Grotto on the Councils grounds this past October. It was recovered from Jamaica Bay three months later. The ceremony will begin with a 9:00 a.m. Mass at the Knights Hall located at 333 Beach 90th St., celebrated by the council’s Chaplain Fr. James Devine. Immediately after the Mass, there will be a brief Rededication Ceremony. A complimentary continental breakfast will follow. All are invited to attend.

Hands Across the Sand is happening on Saturday, May 20 at noon at Beach 67th Street. A crowd will join hands forming a line across the sand; one of hundreds of synchronized events globally, to raise awareness about the dangers of dirty fuels and the need to speed the transition to available, affordable clean energy solutions.

After a whole year of citizen science, communicating through art, beach clean-ups, reusable-bag silk-screening, designing trashcan lids, creating friendly reminders, and exploring the effectiveness of protests/rallies/marches, the 5th grade at PS 43 is proud to announce its RALLY FOR THE FUTURE on Monday May 22 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the RWA Firehouse on Beach 59th Street.There will be 300 students from Rockaway schools, creating garbage-art and giving speeches.

Arlene Cornell, a founding member of Rockaway Artists Alliance and Rockaway’s noted watercolorist, will be exhibiting her latest paintings “Landscapes And Beyond” in a solo show to be held at the RAA’s sTudio 6, gallery at Fort Tilden.The paintings will be on exhibit for two weekends, Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21 and May 27 and 28, from 12 noon to 5 p.m.
