Welcome Surf Bananas!

Dear Editor:

How lovely to read of your new column, "Surf Bananas" and welcome to Annie McBride and Reece Pacheco. It is always nice to hear about people who fall in love with the Rockaways and decide to make it their home, as you both have. Once that salt water is in your veins, it's hard to imagine being anyplace else!

I am writing this letter in the hope that you are able to, perhaps through your column, dispel the false myth out there that surfing was brought to the Rockaways by the Brooklyn hipster crowd. I have heard this stated by countless surfing "DFDs," and I cannot stress enough, how completely false and inaccurate this is. Rockaway Beach has a very long, local, surfing culture.

A lifelong Rockaway resident (I grew up here in the 1960s), I can attest to the fact that there has always been a major local surfing scene. In fact, it was (and still is) possible to see surfers along Rockaway Beach throughout the calendar year, weather conditions permitting.
