If you are a highly-motivated dialysis patient who wants to maintain an active lifestyle and take greater responsibility for your care, then home dialysis might be a good treatment option for you. Rockaway Dialysis, located at 529 Beach 20th St. is now offering its patients that freedom to choose an in-home treatment program.

According to Rhonda Bair, the vice president of Rockaway Dialysis, it is the only facility in Rockaway providing patients with the option of home dialysis care.

“We’re very excited about this,” said Bair. “It gives the patient back some normalcy and makes them more comfortable.”

Because of these issues, more and more patients are turning to home dialysis. Rockaway Dialysis recognized this need, and now has a trained staff of nurses who will instruct patients and their caretakers how to operate a portable dialysis machine. For patients who need dialysis three times a week, it gives them the chance to be more comfortable at home.

“The nurses pride themselves in training patients and their caretakers,” said Bair.

Dr. Olusegun Ogunfowora of Rockaway Dialysis believes that this treatment is the best for patients, because it doesn’t necessitate traveling back and forth to and from the center.

“We want our patients to have the best treatment for their kidneys and to show them the advantages of home dialysis,” said Dr. Ogunfowora.

“It reduces their anxiety and gives patients a healthy, longer life,” said Dr. Ogunfowora.

If they do not have a caretaker or would prefer someone to assist them at their home for dialysis, the Rockaway Dialysis can provide a nurse to come to a patient’s home.

“It’s all about giving them the knowledge on the process and the confidence that they can do this themselves,” said Bair.
