Gas Leak Shuts Down Mott Avenue
Four units from the FDNY’s Big House fire station in Far Rockaway responded to a gas leak that closed down Mott Avenue between Cornaga Avenue and Beach 20th Street on Tuesday afternoon.
According to FDNY sources “a small gas leak in a line coming out of a car” caused the commotion outside Chase Bank at 19-12 Mott Avenue just off Smith Place.
The units responded at 2:55 p.m. and “closed out” the job at 4:02 p.m. said the source. During that time firefighters hosed down the area to get rid of the gas. Then used what is called speedy dry to absorb and break up the heavy fumes as they pushed the water into the sewers.
At least two buses and other vehicles had been held up by the FDNY action. Just before leaving one MTA driver said, “We’ve been here for 20 or 30 minutes.”
